Are Michigan And Ohio State Too Much To Handle For Penn State In 2023? | Big Ten Football 2023

from College Football with Sam · host Samuel Recker

Mark Rogers @MarkRogersVOCFB asked a brilliant question to Penn State head coach James Franklin today at Big Ten Media Days. He asked, "Your two chief rivals in the eastern division, Ohio State and Michigan, have built their offensive teams in very different ways. How have you structured your roster, your recruiting, your approach, to take both of those approaches on?". Basically, he was asking coach Franklin if he is doing his job, as the Nittany Lions hope to one day return to Indianapolis and reclaim the crown of the Big Ten. I don't know exactly how the season will end and only games, not preseason polls, will determine whether a team's season is a success or a failure. I think Penn State Football, while clearly reaching a near-elite/elite status, is just one year away from achieving the level Michigan and Ohio State currently are. Additionally, I don't think James Franklin is doing everything he needs to do to take on the Wolverines or the Buckeyes, but my thoughts have less to do with the current state of Penn State's roster because I think there is more roster than coaching concerns on this Penn State team. Penn State Football has recruited well in the trenches, phenomenally on defense, and they also have a 6'5", 243-pound quarterback on their roster who was a 5-star coming out of high school. The staff has also historically developed players well and nurtured several NFL draft picks. However, Michigan and Ohio State currently have better head and assistant coaches, and overall they have far superior rosters in my opinion. Both Michigan Football and Ohio State Football return more overall production and more All-Big Ten players than Penn State. The Buckeyes and Wolverines also have the elite offensive line and defensive tackle play that the Nittany Lions severely lack, as guard Donovan Jackson and defensive tackle Mike Hall are listed as 1st round picks in the 2024 NFL draft for Ohio State and Michigan has had back-to-back Joe Moore award winning offensive lines (and a 1st round DT in the 2023 NFL draft, with Kris Jenkins potentially being that in 2024). On top of that, James Franklin is a worse game-day coach than Jim Harbaugh or Ryan Day and that is well documented. Penn State can absolutely beat one of these teams because of their immense talent and upside at quarterback and defensive end. However, I think it is more likely Penn State losses to these two teams again, as the matchups highly favor Ohio State and Michigan.
