In this episode, we listen in on a controller with some great intuition. A private pilot at Rocky Mountain Metro airport, radios the tower preparing to take off, but he doesn't sound quite right. The pilot is slurring his words and can't seem to remember the runway numbers at the airport. At the end of the recording, you will hear the controller ask the pilot to shut down the aircraft so authorities could ask him some questions. The move towards more renewables in our energy systems complicates matters even further, requiring the development of an integrated power grid and continuous and steady transformation of the UK power system. Network flows must be managed reliably under uncertain demands, uncertain supply, emerging network technologies and possible failures and, further, prices in related markets can be highly volatile. Mathematicians working with engineers and economists, can make significant contributions to address such issues, by helping to develop fit-for-purpose models for next generation energy systems.
