Her collection of poems, Thomas and Beulah, based on the lives of her grandparents, earned her the 1987 Pulitzer Prize for Poetry. She was only the second African-American to win this prize. In 1993, she was appointed to a two-year term as Poet Laureate of the United States and Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress. Parkman has been hailed as one of America's great historians and as a master of narrative history. He is most known for his The Oregon Trail and his seven volume work on the history of the French and English in North America. A Half Century of Conflict is the sixth volume of the series but was the last to be published in 1892. It covers the period from 1700 to 1748.
