Can the Gut Affect Your Pelvic Health? (Trending with Timmerie)

from The Best of the Week · host Relevant Radio

If you’ve ever had a weird gut feeling about your actual gut… you might be onto something.  Timmerie brings on Dr. Tabatha Barber, a triple board-certified OB-GYN and functional medicine expert, who says: Your gut could be messing with your pelvic health.  This content is meant solely for informational purposes only; we encourage you to consult with your physician for expert advice. You can listen to the whole conversation with Dr. Barber here. Endometriosis, fibroids, infertility, painful periods: All that might be starting in your gut.  Dr. Barber spent years doing major surgeries thinking endometriosis and fibroids were to blame. But now, she’s considered that the real issue could be leaky gut, bad bacteria, yeast, and parasites that leak toxins through your intestines right into your pelvis.  Dr. Barber used to do surgery after surgery thinking she was helping women heal, only to see them back a year or two later in the same pain. Why?Because nobody was fixing what could be the root cause: the gut. So, while traditional OB-GYNs are taught to treat symptoms (suppress hormones, do surgery), functional medicine goes deeper and asks: What started the fire? So... can food really fix fibroids? It depends, but here’s something to consider: -80% of Dr. Barber's patients get better with diet + basic supplements alone. -Others might need more testing to see what bugs are in your gut and how to kick them out. -You may have leaky gut, autoimmune stuff, or food sensitivities that need actual healing... not just another surgery. “Once I realized this,” Dr. Barber says, “I felt sad for all the women I thought I was helping with surgery when really, I wasn't.”  If you’re dealing with: -Painful or irregular periods -Recurrent ovarian cysts -Endometriosis or fibroids -Infertility ...it might be worth examining your gut health.
