Recently I had what I would call a surreal experience: coming face to face with the essence of evil. It happened when was at a formal event and seated next to a man, who because of his actions, has been universally held responsible for the deaths of thousands and the upending of millions of lives. The remarkable thing was how ordinary he looked. If I hadn’t known better, all I would have seen was an elegantly dressed well-kept man. He knew who he was and the misery he had caused and his demeanor at that table made me realize it made no difference to him. Seeing him there made me question how I look at evil and even about the nature of evil itself. This happened as I was reading the fascinating new book by Cate Montana called Cracking The Matrix: 14 Keys To Individual And Global Freedom that takes a look at the nature of evil and its effect on us. On one level we all are aware of the evil around us that takes its form in war, ritual abuse, torture and in the individual acts that people do to each other.
