This world, unlike her previous adventures in Wonderland, is a land where everything is reversed. Alice encounters the Red Queen, who invites her to become a pawn in a gigantic living chess game. The chapter sets the stage for the chessboard landscape of this strange and whimsical world and introduces the concept of moving forward while staying in the same place, which is a recurring theme throughout the book.
