Confidence & Self-Esteem: How Comfortable Are You Within Yourself?

from Raw Conversations with Corinne Blum · host Corinne Blum

Confidence isn’t something you acquire from the outside. Confidence naturally comes when you become comfortable within yourself, and in order to feel comfortable within yourself, you have to get comfy with the parts that make you feel uncomfortable. That’s a mouthful! You can say affirmations, sure. You can do things that make you feel good, sure. Ultimately though, confidence arises when we’ve learned to sit with our deeper discomfort: our fear, pain, sadness and wounding. We’re flexing a new muscle when we “stay with” our experience. We’re building trust with ourselves when we stay without judgment or criticism. We’re showing ourselves that we’re trustworthy when we stay long enough that we recognise we’re not abandoning, rejecting or neglecting our inner most tender parts of ourselves. When we get comfortable staying there, we’ll be far more comfortable in other situations, be it: dating, a job interview, being in a social group etc. If you’re comfortable within yourself no matter what arises, even if you feel terribly embarrassed, you’re going to begin to feel good within yourself because you won’t be resisting who you are. Instead, you’ll embrace who you uniquely are (quirks and all), allowing you to accept and inevitably love all parts of you and feel comfortable within your own skin. All this will lead you to feel confident and which in turn, will support you in showing up in life in more authentic, ‘true to you’ ways. Why waste a life being someone that you’re not in order to impress someone that ultimately won’t be right for you? “A privilege of a lifetime, it to be who you truly are.” (Jung).
