from The Wath Presents · host Dale Wathen

Consequence (born Dexter Raymond Mills, Jr. on June 14, 1977) is an American hip hop artist from Queens, New York. Biography Early life Dexter Raymond Mills was born on June 14, 1977 in Queens, New York. He grew up in a very poor section of the area. Mills is the younger cousin of fellow emcee Q-Tip. When he was younger, Dexter developed a love for hip hop music and was a huge fan of Rakim. In his early years he used to follow his cousin and his group, A Tribe Called Quest. Soon after, they got a record deal and he tagged along for the ride. Music career Dexter soon developed the stage name, Consequence. At the age of sixteen, he made his first official appearance on the Tribe's 1993 album. He would go on to make numerous appearances on their songs and albums. After the group disbanded in 1998, Consequence was forced to search for a label on his own. Consequence soon earned a deal at Elektra Records. He recorded an album's worth of material to be released in 2000, but the label cut back that year and by 2004, the label had ceased operations. In 2004, he released the mixtape, Take 'Em To The Cleaners, which would find its way into the hands of Kanye West. After this West offered him a guest spot on his debut album The College Dropout. He went on to appear on West's second album. In 2005, Kanye signed Consequence to his label GOOD Music through a deal with Columbia Records. In 2007, Consequence finally released his debut album, Don't Quit Your Day Job!. Singles from the album were "Callin' Me" and "Grammy Family." His debut album received mixed reviews and gained him comparisons to Nas as the poor man's version. The album sold over 7,000 copies in its first week. Since the release of his debut album, he has begun working on his second album, You Win Some, You Lose Some, which is set to be produced by Kanye West and Q-Tip. It's slated for release in spring 2009 on G.O.O.D Music and Universal Motown
