In 16th-century Scotland, religious beliefs differing from the established Roman Catholic Church led to significant persecution and martyrdom, largely instigated by the Catholic hierarchy, particularly Cardinal David Beaton. Individuals were accused of "heresy" for a range of reasons, from preaching the "truth of the Gospel" and refusing to recant their beliefs, to seemingly minor transgressions.Accusations included actions perceived as mocking religious figures or symbols, such as decorating a house carving to resemble the papal tiara in perceived mockery of the cardinal's cap, or defacing an image of a saint. More often, people were condemned for not adhering to specific Catholic practices, like failing to pray to the Virgin Mary (even while in childbed) or breaking religious rules such as eating meat on a fast day. Those found guilty faced brutal executions, including hanging, burning at the stake, and, in a particularly harrowing case, drowning a woman along with her sucking infant. Despite the cruelty, the sources emphasize the steadfast faith and courage of the martyrs, who often comforted one another and expressed certainty of meeting in heaven.George Wishart was a prominent figure in these accounts, a preacher of the Gospel relentlessly pursued by Cardinal Beaton. Wishart faced multiple assassination attempts organized by the cardinal before his eventual capture, trial, and execution by strangling and burning in 1546. At the stake, Wishart prophesied Cardinal Beaton's downfall. This prediction was seen as divinely fulfilled when Beaton was murdered in his castle shortly after, a death described as the "just revenge of God's mighty judgment" and marked by an ignominious burial. Walter Mill, an elderly priest executed by burning in 1558, is noted as the last person mentioned in these accounts to suffer martyrdom for his faith in Scotland.Reformed Theologian GPT: https://chat.openai.com/g/g-XXwzX1gnv-reformed-theologianPatreon: patreon.com/edi_reformed
