Deep Dive into Foxe's Book of Martyrs by John Foxe - The Life and Story of the True Servant and Martyr of God
from Reformed Thinking · host Edison Wu
William Tyndale, a pivotal figure in the English Reformation, dedicated his life to translating the Bible into English so that the common people could understand God's Word. Educated at Oxford and Cambridge, Tyndale's deep devotion to scripture led him to challenge the established religious authorities. He believed the lack of accessible scripture was the root of the Church's problems and aimed to empower individuals to discern religious truth for themselves.Tyndale's translation efforts met with fierce opposition from the English clergy, who saw it as a threat to their authority and feared it would expose their practices. They publicly denounced his work as heresy, secretly accused him to authorities, and actively sought to suppress and destroy his translations. Ironically, Bishop Tonstal of London unwittingly aided Tyndale by buying copies of his New Testament to burn, providing Tyndale with the funds to continue his work and print revised editions.Forced to leave England, Tyndale continued his translation work in Germany and the Netherlands. Despite facing hardships, including a shipwreck, he persisted in his mission. He was eventually betrayed in Antwerp by Henry Philips, who gained his trust and then orchestrated his arrest by imperial authorities. Imprisoned for a year and a half, Tyndale reportedly converted his keeper and others. Condemned by the emperor's decree, Tyndale was martyred in 1536, strangled and burned at the stake. His final words were a prayer: "Lord! open the king of England's eyes." Tyndale's unwavering commitment to making the Scriptures accessible laid a crucial foundation for the English Reformation.Reformed Theologian GPT: https://chat.openai.com/g/g-XXwzX1gnv-reformed-theologianPatreon: patreon.com/edi_reformed
