Deep Dive into Institutes of the Christian Religion by John Calvin - The Knowledge of God and That of Ourselves are Connected. How They are Interrelated

from Reformed Thinking · host Edison Wu

According to Calvin, true wisdom encompasses both the knowledge of God and the knowledge of ourselves, and these two are deeply interconnected. While it's challenging to determine which comes first, contemplating ourselves naturally leads us to consider God as the source of our being and gifts. Conversely, we can only achieve a clear understanding of ourselves by comparing ourselves to the perfect standard of God.Solely examining ourselves is insufficient for true self-awareness because we lack an objective benchmark. Our innate pride leads to self-deception, and without God as a reference, we remain unaware of our true limitations and imperfections. God's perfection acts as a "straightedge," revealing our "unrighteousness, foulness, folly, and impurity."Encountering God's majesty evokes profound awe, fear, and a deep sense of personal insignificance. Scriptural reactions include dread, wonder, being shaken, and even the anticipation of death. This overwhelming experience highlights the vast disparity between God's perfect being and humanity's inherent lowliness. Even righteous figures like Abraham and Elijah recognized their frailty and inability to withstand God's glorious presence.Recognizing our human failings, such as ignorance, vanity, poverty, infirmity, and depravity, plays a vital role in leading us to God. The awareness of our lack creates a desire for the perfection and goodness that reside in Him alone. Our "miserable ruin" compels us to look upward, and the contrast between our deficiencies and God's infinitude becomes apparent. Discontentment with ourselves is a necessary step towards genuinely seeking God, as it exposes our need for something beyond our limited selves. Ultimately, both self-knowledge and the knowledge of God are essential and mutually reinforcing paths to true understanding.Reformed Theologian GPT: https://chat.openai.com/g/g-XXwzX1gnv-reformed-theologianPatreon: patreon.com/edi_reformed
