She Told the Truth on TV. Weeks Later, She Was Dead | The Ruth Thalia Sayas Sanchez Case
from True Crime and Crochet · host Bree Burch
In 2012, 19-year-old Ruth Thalía Sayas Sánchez appeared as the very first contestant on Peru’s El Valor de la Verdad, a reality game show that paid people to reveal their most private secrets on national television.Ruth won 15,000 soles after answering deeply personal and humiliating questions in front of her parents, her boyfriend, a studio audience, and eventually the entire country.Weeks later, she disappeared. Her body was later found buried in a well, covered with rocks and concrete, on land connected to her boyfriend’s uncle. Her boyfriend, Bryan Romero Leiva, confessed, but the court later found most of his confession was false. Bryan and his uncle Redy Leiva were eventually sentenced to life in prison. But this case is bigger than one murder. It raises disturbing questions about reality TV, public humiliation, media exploitation, poverty, misogyny, and what happens when a young woman’s private pain becomes entertainment. This case also has chilling parallels to the Jenny Jones Show tragedy, where a televised “secret crush” reveal was followed by the murder of Scott Amedure by Jonathan Schmitz. So today, we’re talking about Ruth Sayas, El Valor de la Verdad, Beto Ortiz, Bryan Romero Leiva, Redy Leiva, and the ugly machine that turns shame into ratings. Please keep the comments respectful. Ruth was a real person. Her family lived this.
