Importantly, there are no explicit texts that support this view, and the church is referred to in feminine terms as the "bride of Christ," rather than as a "he," as the restrainer is in 2 Thessalonians 2. Nevertheless, the assertion that the church serves as "the restrainer of sin" has mobilized a specific group of Christians, particularly conservative evangelicals, to influence laws and government, creating a nationalism that imposes their own beliefs and values on others.
