This session with artist Karen Marston illuminated my thinking of the discussion around whether you have to have a miserable childhood to be an artist. Personally, I don't think you do, but talking with Karen led me to think there is so much destruction in the world, that having a secure childhood can actually aid an artist to confront a much larger, more universal problem, such as global warming, as opposed to so much navel gazing as artists such as myself focus on for inspiration. Karen's current show at Owen James Gallery is a great example of seducing the viewer into contemplating the destruction of icebergs.
