Does Developmental Delay Have to Be a Setup for Failure? 09/30/13

from The Thrive Doctors with Dr. Kim D'Eramo & Dr. Mario Torres-Leon · host Contact Talk Radio Network

Many doctors and parents alike equate the diagnosis of developmental delay in a child with a decreased likelihood of success. There are, however, many alternative ways to assist children in going beyond limitations. This week’s guest not only gets unprecedented results for her patients, but had received this diagnosis herself, and gone on to succeed as an adult. Lisa Shooman is a board certified occupational therapist. She is a mother, author, parenting coach, and researcher who overcame a developmental delay as a young child and went on to earn her master’s degree in occupational therapy from Columbia University in 1996. Lisa completed internships in OT at Children’s Hospital in Boston and the Rusk Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine in New York City. Lisa has over 17 years of clinical and research expertise as a therapist in child development including behavioral psychology, low visual disturbance, handwriting and motor skill development. She is the founder of FUNction Success for Kids, where she now serves as a coach to children with developmental challenges to help them overcome their diagnoses and succeed. Join The Thrive Doctors as they uncover new modalities to assist children in succeeding beyond what has been conventionally thought possible.
