In this episode of Heretics, I’m joined by Dr. Daniel Allington, a scholar and commentator, to examine research findings on identity, values, and belonging — and why discussing them has become so contentious inside universities and public life. Dr. Allington explains that a body of survey data and social research raises uncomfortable questions about how different communities relate to British identity, shared norms, and civic cohesion. According to his analysis, some findings suggest persistent gaps in identification with “Britishness” among certain populations — conclusions that are often resisted or reframed rather than debated on their merits. These are his interpretations of the evidence, not blanket claims about individuals, and they invite closer scrutiny rather than slogans. The conversation digs into why such studies face pushback. Dr. Allington outlines how research touching on political Islam, integration, and antisemitism can become politically charged, regardless of methodology. He describes institutional pressures — from funding incentives and peer review to reputational risk and informal warnings — that shape what scholars feel safe to publish. The result, he argues, is selective silence: evidence exists, but discussion is curtailed. Crucially, this episode makes clear distinctions. It is not about hostility toward people or faiths. Dr. Allington stresses the difference between Islam as a religion, Islamism as an ideology, and the varied experiences of individuals. The focus is on attitudes and outcomes measured in studies, and on whether universities can still host honest debate about them without moral panic. We also explore the policy implications. If evidence about integration is ignored, solutions fail. Public trust erodes when lived experience clashes with official narratives, and communities — including minorities — are poorly served. Dr. Allington argues that confronting data openly is more respectful than pretending problems don’t exist. Why does this matter now? Because debates about immigration, cohesion, and national identity are intensifying — and decisions are being made whether or not the evidence is discussed. Dr. Allington asks whether Britain can address social fractures without first allowing research to be examined in good faith. You don’t have to agree with every conclusion to find this conversation valuable. Its purpose is to restore evidence-led discussion, resist caricature, and understand why some findings are treated as taboo before they’re even heard.
