e017 – Toxicity Detox – with Sabrina Greer

from You've Got This, Mama - Podcast · host Sabrina Greer - YGTMAMA Inc.

Welcome back Mamas and Happy 2019. 2018 was a pretty crazy year, wasn't it? I don't know about you but I am so happy to be back. I thoroughly missed the podcasting game and all of you! Today I dive into what I do instead of New Year's resolutions. Listen, I've got nothing against resolutions if they work for you, but for me, it just sets me up for disappointment and failure due to unrealistic expectations and rigid deadlines. As mothers, we have no choice but to be flexible, amirite? We don't know from moment to moment what is coming at us next, let alone a few months from now. I am not suggesting to stop setting goals for yourself, quite the opposite actually, I am suggesting setting fluid, flexible goals and encouraging you to go easy on yourself with said goals. On today's episode, the very first episode of season two, I, Sabrina Greer, share with you, not my recap of 2018, not my goal setting strategies or hopes and promises for 2019, I share a simple life-shift that works for me in hopes to empower you and set you up for success in the coming year. Did you know that 86% of people that make new years resolutions, give them up by January 17th? I came across this staggering statistic in my research and it got me thinking . . . WHY? I believe it is the rigidity of resolutions. There is little room for error. They force you to go cold turkey, and like a bad diet, do not net long-term results just quick fixes. I share with you my personal formula that has worked for me several years in a row now. Toxicity Detoxing. Toxicity Detoxing requires you to look at the things in your life that are no longer serving you. I made a list of five, however, subcategories are welcomed here. Toxic People/Relationships - Maybe someone you follow on Instagram makes you feel bad about yourself? A mommy-group you are a member of is constantly shaming others, in turn, making you feel anxious or less than? Maybe your MIL is a real piece of work? Is a childless friend consistently guilt-trippin' you? Bye... I am not suggesting cutting people off or out of your life completely but, what would happen if you spent less time, less energy, less mental space on these relationships? Jim Rohn says "you are the sum of the five people you surround yourself with." Who are you becoming? Who are you showing up as? I say - see ya to any toxic person or relationship that is no longer serving you! It is normal for friendships to change and evolve. Do not let toxic relationships or people hold you back. Toxic Behaviours/Habits - Is your new year's resolution to quit smoking? Wake up earlier? Get to the gym five days a week? Maybe you drink eight cups of coffee a day and your resolution is to quit caffeine? I may not be a practicing psychiatrist but psychology 101 taught me this - harsh and rigid rules like these set you up for failure. Try a day-by-day approach, small actionable steps that get you closer to your desired outcome. We have all heard "it takes 21 days to change a habit" right? Well if this is the case and you quit by the 17th, we don't stand a chance. I believe in fluidity and flexibility, being kind and gentle with ourselves, celebrating our wins, even the small ones and not getting bent out of shape about our setbacks. Life is too short sista! Toxic Substances - what have you noticed is not serving your body? Coffee? Wine? Dairy? I do not believe in crash diets (not saying I haven't tried them all) but what if you just ate what nourished your body and felt good, rather than following some trend of the moment? Hey if Ketosis is your jam or Atkins works for you, power to you Mama. My point is, what works for one blood, body, energy type can't possibly work for all. Do what feels good and empowers YOU. Toxic Environments - Have you been binge-watching Netflix series Tidying Up? Me too.

The move towards more renewables in our energy systems complicates matters even further, requiring the development of an integrated power grid and continuous and steady transformation of the UK power system. Network flows must be managed reliably under uncertain demands, uncertain supply, emerging network technologies and possible failures and, further, prices in related markets can be highly volatile. Mathematicians working with engineers and economists, can make significant contributions to address such issues, by helping to develop fit-for-purpose models for next generation energy systems. These interdisciplinary approaches are looking to address a range of associated problems, including modelling, prediction, simulation, control, market and mechanism design and optimisation.
