Have you ever been dead wrong about something, but swore up and down it was true? This week I found myself lost in these city streets with nothing but the strong conviction that I was right, and my pride. After realizing we actually passed the same park thrice, my ego had me thinking they must’ve added a new freeway exit. (Really? A new exit? C’mon now.) So convinced that I was right, I wouldn’t let up and course correct - despite all of the evidence telling me to do so. As absurd as this was, how often have similar situations come up in our personal and professional life? How many times has our ego convinced us we were right, when the circumstances and evidence were all urging us to think again? If we believe we know everything, then it means we’ve stopped being teachable. Our ability to heed wise counsel or even accept help becomes compromised, and in doing so, we’ve unknowingly stopped our forward progress…

Talks by Sensei Richard von Sturmer Sensei Richard von Sturmer Sensei Richard von Sturmer has a long history in Zen: from 1993 to 2003 he lived and worked at the Rochester Zen Center, a Buddhist community in upstate New York, then in 2004, back in New Zealand, he co-founded the Auckland Zen Centre along with Roshi Amala Wrightson. In 2024 he was sanctioned as a Zen teacher. He has given many talks at the Centre, and some of them are collected here. Richard-sensei is also a writer and poet. Seven collections of his writing have been published including: A Network of Dissolving Threads (1991), Suchness: Zen Poetry and Prose (2005), Book of Equanimity Verses (2013), This Explains Everything (2016), Postcard Stories (2019), Resonating Distances (2022) and Walking With Rocks, Dreaming With Rivers : My Year In The Waikato (2023).
