Réalisé en 1969, coup d'envoi d'un âge d'or du cinéma américain baptisé le Nouvel Hollywood, Easy Rider invente l'une des formes reines de la décennie à venir (le road movie), impose une représentation du hippie et de ses aspirations, et s'achève par une réplique énigmatique de Peter Fonda improvisée sur le tournage : "We blew it!" ("On a tout foutu en l'air !"). Au cinéma, la révolution contre culturelle débute à peine mais l'un de ses initiateurs prophétise déjà son échec. Il s'agit donc de s'interroger sur les possibilités de cette mort annoncée (genèse, triomphe et postérité d'Easy Rider) et de comprendre comment, en dix années magnifiques, un acte de naissance s'est transformé en acte de décès.
