What she sees there is the story of how the house began. In 1873, Frank Smith is finishing construction on the grand mansion he has built as a gift for his beloved wife. She is traveling west to join him. She never arrives. Wracked with grief and slowly losing his grip on reality, Frank begins seeing a shadowy woman flitting through the halls of his nearly-finished home — an apparition that will lead him, eventually, to commit a murder he doesn't understand and bury its evidence beneath the basement floor.
