Ep.3 of 17 GCSE Frankenstein: Analysis of the structure & form of Frankenstein (AQA)
from Audiopi GCSE English Literature & Language Tutorials
Frankenstein (Mary Shelley) - award winning podcast tutorials from AudiopiWritten by Mary Shelley, Frankenstein has horrified and enthralled readers for nearly 200 years. In this series, especially written for GCSE students, Alex Blott and Alexandra Campbell take you through all the chapters and provide a detailed analysis of all the key elements of this sublime novel, from its context and genre, to an in-depth discussion of all the characters.Tutorial SummaryThis tutorial discusses the epistolary form, the two unreliable (uninformed) narrators and the framing of the narrative. We define epistolary form and how it’s used in Gothic fiction and address the concept of ‘truth’ through Walton’s letters. We look at good vs bad science: Frankenstein learns blasphemous science from transcendental texts and ‘hack’ scholarship. The monster learns ‘truth’ through literature and observation. We discuss embedded narrative. Walton’s narrative includes Frankenstein’s narrative, which includes the monster’s narrative, which in turn is all edited together by Walton’s sister.Throughout the podcast we relate to questions of trauma and secrecy, birth.Series TutorsMr Alex Blott M.A., B.A. English Literature Tutor Miss Alexandra Campbell B.A. (1st Class), M.A. (Distinction) University of GlasgowThe first 5 episodes in this series, and every series in this podcast show, are free to listen to!
