EP 442: Mountain Hunting with Cam Foss

from The Rich Outdoors

Over the years I have been lucky enough to meet some of the best hunters from around the world. I have also been lucky enough to get the opportunity to bounce ideas and tactics off these guys and it has helped me significantly. Today is one of the times. Cam and I met through Adam Foss his brother a few years back at Sheep Show. Over the last couple of years, I have picked Cam's brain on sheep hunting as I have virtually zero experience in the matter and cam is a very seasoned sheep hunter. This podcast is basically a normal conversation with me asking cam 1,000 questions like I am a 5-year-old wrapping my head around a completely foreign subject. Cam is not only a great sheep hunter but has mountain hunting experience all around the world. One of my biggest takeaways from this podcast was the same thing I beat into young elk hunters. Sometimes you just have to go for it. Mountian hunting is oftentimes so much about being patient and making the right calls, but you also have to know when to push your luck because success in the mountains will never just walk up and let you take it.   Show Notes:  Intro - About Cam - 03:43 Cam's Routine & Sheep Tactics - 10:25 Bighorn Patterns & Range - 19:51 Efficiency & Old Ram Behavior - 27:22 Hunting Rams in Timber - 33:10 Cam's Bicycle Hunt Story - 37:32 Late Hunts, Tracks, & Sheep Country - 39:44 Escape Routes, Stalking, & Top vs. Bottom 47:00 Cam's Average Day Approach - 52:33 Peak Times & Slow Times - 56:57 Unlimited Hunt Advice - 01:03:50   This episode brought to you by FHF Gear, more than just a bino-harness FHF makes a modular system that brings tactical efficiency to your hunting setup. I have been running FHF harness for about three years now and this is by far my favorite harness that I have used. The minimalist design doesn't feel like I am wearing a front backpack, and the modular abilities allow me to add storage or pieces depending on what kind of hunt I am on. If I am heading into Grizz country for an archery hunt I can mount my Razco holster to my harness and have my pistol available. If I am rifle hunting I will probably run my bear spray or If I am nowhere near grizzlies I will run my bipod on my harness. I love that, depending on the hunt I can add or subtract pieces to fit the hunt and everything I need is right there within reach.   The FHF bino harness is a solid piece of gear and really everyone at that company is just really good people who I am more than happy to support. Check them out and if you have an FHF harness already check out all of the new accessories Paul has been designing.
