Ep62 - Gustavo Serafini: Disability Doesn't Mean Inability

from HIListically Speaking with Hilary Russo · host Hilary Russo

"Disability doesn't mean inability". I can almost hear my father saying those words to me from the hospital bed. A place he spent a lot of time as a Diabetic and amputee. Years of wear and tear due to poor diet and exercise put this former semi-pro athlete turned attorney in a hospital gown far too often. But, what you may or may not know about my dad is that he was the king of good humor and positive attitude. My father has been gone 19 years this month. So, to continue to conversation about disability and in honor of Diabetes Awareness Month this November, I'm sharing a special episode of HIListically Speaking. Gustavo Serafini invited me on his podcast Enabled Disabled to talk about my journey with a disabled parent. During our time, I shared a lot about how my dad's health impacted me as a child and how I used what I learned from him to embrace the illness and create a greater understanding and compassion for disabilities. Plus, my own battle with chronic pain due to TMJ and surgery. And a powerful teaching moment from a disabled child that created a shift in my life to make better choices for myself and in support others in need. In a month that is filled with gratitude, I'm grateful you're choosing to tune in and take a piece of my story with you on your own journey.  Add the Enabled Disabled Podcast to your list.
