EPISODE 1: Ending Period Poverty
from Confident · host Sheri West
Join us this week as we return for Season 4 and discuss ending period poverty with CT State Representative Kate Farrar and some inspiring Gen Z activists! Our discomfort in discussing periods prevents us from having the critical and necessary conversation about period poverty. In the United States, 1 in 4 menstruators is unable to afford an adequate supply of period products required for their health due to the burden of expense. The cost of these products makes them inaccessible for many individuals who are low income, forcing them to substitute tampons or pads for unsafe and unhygienic alternatives. Featuring Kate Farrar: CT State Representative Kate Farrar was elected in November 2020 to represent the 20th District in West Hartford, CT. Kate has over 20 years’ experience as a non-profit advocate and active community volunteer, championing working families and women and girls. She has also worked to pass laws ensuring equity in healthcare, education, and the workplace. Kate has a bachelor's degree in political science from the University of Connecticut and a master's in public administration from Syracuse University. Also - Gen Z activists: Asija Qyteza (UConn) and Joy Ren (Wilton HS)
