Focusing on Your Passion with Matthew Grabell

from Lawyer Business Advantage

In this episode, Alay and Matthew discuss:  Why living training is so impactful.  Creating a successful, interactive training or seminar. One of the most common mistakes employers make.  Matthew’s book and how it can help employers.    Key Takeaways:  Having a good education on rights and responsibilities in the workplace will prevent lawsuits in the future.  There are nuances in every employee/employer relationship that lawyers will go after – they know the playbook and they know where to go after.  Any policy must be applied equally across the board. If it is not, the person treated less favorably could come after the company for it.  When writing a book, set aside time each week to make progress – even if only 20 minutes per week. If you don’t set aside the time, you will find excuses to not do it.  Tweetable Moments: “I sat at depositions time and time again, where CEOs, presidents, or managers just made terrible errors. And it wasn’t because they were a bad manager, it was because they didn’t have the proper training.” —  Matthew Grabell “Attorney entrepreneurs, if you’re running your firm and you’re not happy with your practice, there are opportunities to change it by veering to alternative service offerings.” —  Alay Yajnik “I really do believe that with the right education and the right training managers can learn from these mistakes, and maybe the number of filings [with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission] can go down.” —  Matthew Grabell    About Matthew Grabell: Employee Relations Solutions (“ERS”) was founded after Mr. Grabell enjoyed a successful career as an employment attorney representing employees who felt victimized in the workplace by unlawful discrimination, harassment, or retaliation. He has litigated hundreds of employment cases including taking depositions, arguing and defending motions, and attending mediations and trials. Mr. Grabell was struck by how frequently his adversaries lost their cases (or were forced into costly settlements) due to a company’s lack of knowledge of the many legal land mines that could have easily been avoided. In 2007, he decided to “switch teams” in order to provide corporations with the legal weapons necessary to limit exposure altogether, while keeping costs of outside law firms down should a lawsuit be filed. ERS opens up the plaintiff’s “playbook” to corporations who want practical employment law training as well as strategic tips on how to protect themselves from issues BEFORE they become legal liabilities. Mr. Grabell has authored many articles on issues related to employment law and has addressed executives, managers, and employees at several corporations, including Showtime, Marvel, Disney/ABC, Imagine Entertainment, Rising Pharmaceutical, CBS Paramount, Wendy’s, DCH Auto Group, Revel Entertainment, Bergen Community College, and Wyndham Worldwide. He has also been a repeat presenter at The Garden State Council – SHRM Annual Conference and The Tri-State Human Resources Management Association Annual Conference as well as various local SHRM chapters. Mr. Grabell received his B.S. degree in Marketing from New York University and his J.D. from Seton Hall University.
