Il reçoit également l'enseignement du maître de chapelle de la paroisse, qui lui transmet l'art du chant et les techniques de l'orgue. Puis, il rentre sur concours au 'stadkonvikt' où il reçoit l'enseignement de Salieri. Admirateur d'Haydn, de Mozart et de Beethoven, il compose sa première uvre à 13 ans. Après s'être essayé à l'enseignement sans succès, il se consacre à l'écriture. Très lié à la jeunesse intellectuelle viennoise, il mène une vie de bohème ponctuée de réunions musicales et littéraires. En 1823, atteint de la syphilis, il prend conscience de la fragilité de la vie et le retranscrit dans sa musique. C'est dans l'indifférence qu'il meurt du typhus. La richesse de l'uvre de Schubert ne fut découverte qu'après sa mort grâce à Liszt qui diffusa ces lieder. Ses symphonies ou ses sonates pour piano n'obtinrent un réel succès que plus tard.
