So when I heard he had written a book about charting the story of God through actual journeys through Bible lands, I grabbed it quickly. What a disappointment. It became obvious early on that “Walking the Bible” was not about strengthening personal faith; it was purely cultural. Can we identify ourselves as being “the people of God” without actually knowing God at all?Lately I’ve been honing my geography skills at www.seterra.com. And I have to admit, I’m getting pretty good. If you need someone to name 50 African nations or distinguish between Turkmenistan and Tajikistan, I’m your guy. But I’m not sure it’s actually improving my life. I’ve also spent a lifetime stockpiling facts from the Bible, memorizing lists of names, verse citations, the number of chapters in Paul’s epistles, all sorts of things. It’s easy to assume that acquiring facts is the same as acquiring wisdom. But after 50-plus years of experimentation, I’ve learned that it’s not.
