Good Talks: How "Organic Farming" and Bureaucratic Colonialism Crippled Sri Lanka's Economy w/ Torben Halbe
from Heard Tell · host Heard Tell
Our guest today is biologist and author Torben Halbe, who joins us to explain how the decimation of Sri Lanka's economy started in large part with horrible agricultural policy. Torben explains how the immediate and overnight regulation for "100% organic farming" was a catastrophy for farmers, plunged the whole country into a food crisis, and exacerbated the economic collapse and currency crisis. Torben also breaks down how outside influences and world organizations prey upon countries like Sri Lanka where they can enact their policies and ideas easier than in the politically more difficult west, bringing a new bureaucratic colonialism to struggling economies. Also, Torben talks about the balance between policy and the practical, and how the intellectual elite can never seem to balance the two for the benefit of everyone. --------------------Questions, comments, concerns, ideas, or epistles?
