High Rent by Joel Robinson G C G Nine years of bliss in Silverado G C G With a view of the cliffs and the creek G C G Dirt trails for me to wander barefoot No poison sprayed on my foraged foods Plenty of space to shit out there in the woods Until the rent was raised Until the rent was raised! Six months of this suburban limbo With a view of the wall and the street No dirt for me to wander barefoot More noise than humans can tolerate Plenty of ways to kill every vertebrate Because the rent was raised Because the rent was raised! The higher the rent, the further we fall With no place to land and no one to call To live in a tent, to live at the mall We don’t own the land, the land owns us all One minute left to get the facts straight With a view of the past and my feet Where can I go to wander barefoot? No access left for our basic needs Plenty of space is now under lock and key Too bad the rent was raised Was left confused and dazed! The landlord wasn’t fazed! Too bad the rent was raised…

Thus, with perceptive eye for detail, the American naturalist, John Muir, describes life on a pioneer Wisconsin farm in the 1850's. Muir was only eleven years old when his father uprooted the family from a relatively comfortable life in Dunbar, Scotland, to settle in the backwoods of North America. The elder Muir was a religious fundamentalist. What his father taught, John Muir writes, was "grim self denial, in season and out of season, to mortify the flesh, keep our bodies in subjection to Bible laws, and mercilessly punish ourselves for every fault, imagined or committed."
