How Can I Talk Someone Out of Assisted Suicide? (The Inner Life with Patrick Conley)

from The Best of the Week · host Relevant Radio

Patrick Conley and Fr. Dave Heney take on a tough but crucial topic: assisted suicide. If you’ve ever wondered why the Catholic Church stands firmly against it: even when suffering is involved, this podcast episode lays it all out with clarity, compassion, and a good dose of wisdom.   Be sure to check out the whole episode!   🛑 Assisted Suicide: Why Not?   Fr. Dave explains that assisted suicide is completely against Catholic teaching. Life isn’t ours to take; we didn’t create ourselves, and we don’t get to decide when we check out. God gave us life; only He should call us home.   💔 Suicide vs. Assisted Suicide: Key Distinctions   Father goes on to share this: The Church recognizes that suicide is often the tragic result of overwhelming despair, which is why we pray for those who take their own lives and offer funeral Masses for them. Assisted suicide is different; it requires a fully conscious, rational decision to end life: which, by definition, makes it a mortal sin.   💰 The Dark Truth Behind Assisted Suicide   Fr. Dave Heney explains that most assisted suicides aren’t about unbearable pain. Research shows that many people choose it because they feel like a burden, financially or emotionally, on their families. Sometimes, unfortunately, there’s outside pressure involved (“Aunt Edna... we really could use the inheritance…” 😬). This is why the Church fights so hard against it: human life should never be reduced to a financial equation.   🙌 But What About Suffering?   Suffering is real, but modern medicine has made incredible strides in pain management. There are targeted treatments, advanced medications, and new technologies that can make end-of-life care much more bearable. If you're in pain, don’t settle; get a second opinion!   👴 What If Someone Just Feels “Done” With Life?   For the elderly who feel like they’ve “lived enough,” Fr. Dave has some gold: life is still valuable, even when our bodies slow down. Maybe you can’t go hiking or run marathons anymore, but you can share wisdom, write letters, mentor younger family members, and deepen your relationship with God. Your life still has meaning, right up to the very end.   💡 Keep Hope Alive   At the end of the day, the Catholic Church stands against assisted suicide not to be harsh, but because life is sacred. If you or a loved one is struggling with these questions, know that there are better answers, more compassionate care options, and a deeper purpose for your life than ending it early.   ➡️ Need encouragement? Offer up your struggles. Seek wisdom. Know that your life still has purpose. God’s not done with you yet. 💙🙏       The best way to listen to the Best of the Week is on our #1 Free Catholic App. It’s free and always will be!
