How Raheem DeVaughn Reigns Supreme in R&B
from Put Yourself On · host Bobby Pen
In an industry that moves so quickly it's amazing when a recording artist releases a sophomore album. Raheem DeVaughn marks studio album no. 6 with "Decade of a Love King." Raheem DeVaughn, born in New Jersey but raised in the D.C. area, has crafted a sound and vibe all his own that has proved the test of time. The crooner is heavily influenced by Soul music of yesterday, but obviously in tune with the contemporary sound. He proves this dexterity in current no. 1 single "Don't Come Easy." When you listen to Raheem DeVaughn you can't help but notice the Marvin Gaye-esq quality to his silky smooth falsetto, and feel the grit of his growls and Gospel runs. DeVaughn is one artist who has truly studied his craft and his endurance is proof posiitve. In addition to releasing new music both as a solo artist and one half of the Hip-Hop Soul group The Crossrhodes featuring Wes Felton, Raheem DeVaughn has also positioned himself as a figurehead for women's rights and empowerment. Songs like "Woman" and "Queen" are anthems at rally's from the National Mall to Soweto, South Africa. His nonprofit Love Life Foundation has been helping displaced and abused women, hungry and homeless children and even helped to send scholars to college in only four years ago! More than 10 years after hit debut single "Guess Who Loves You More," The Love King of R&B Raheem DeVaughn is still vying for his rightful place as R&B royalty.
