L’Impero Bizantino (395 – 1453) è il nome con cui gli studiosi moderni e contemporanei indicano l’Impero romano d’Oriente – termine che iniziò a diffondersi già durante il dominato dell’imperatore Valente – di cultura prevalentemente greca, separatosi dalla parte occidentale, di cultura quasi esclusivamente latina, dopo la morte di Teodosio I nel 395. Il termine “bizantino” è stato introdotto solo a partire dal XVIII secolo dagli Illuministi, quando l’Impero romano d’Oriente era ormai scomparso da circa tre secoli. L’Impero Romano d’Oriente rimarrà in vita per più di undici secoli, sarà guidato da circa 90 imperatori e avrà un impatto di portata enorme sulla nostra storia. Sarà l’erede e la prosecuzione dell’antico Impero Romano; era infatti romano il suo stato giuridico, la sua capitale era detta “La nuova Roma” e i suoi abitanti erano i Romei. Un “luogo” di incontro quindi tra la struttura statale romana, la cultura greca e la religione cristiana.Alessandra Bucossi, professoressa associata presso l'Università Ca' Foscari Venezia, racconta per Storiainpodcast come la pars Orientalis dell’Impero Romano riuscì a sopravvivere alla caduta della parte Occidentale.
