Tracy Kidder Author Tracy Kidder received the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award for his penetrating history of the microprocessor revolution, Soul of a New Machine. A Harvard graduate and Vietnam veteran, Tracy Kidder first won acclaim for his ability to make the events of everyday life an occasion for deeply moving observation of human relationships in books such as House, Among Schoolchildren and Home Town. In 2003, Tracy Kidder published his most powerful work yet. Mountains Beyond Mountains tells the extraordinary true story of Dr. Paul Farmer, the founder of Partners in Health, who has brought sustainable first-class health care to the most desperate communities of impoverished Haiti. Kidder's subsequent works include Strength in What remains, tells the story of a refugee from the civil war in Burundi who finds a new life in America, but then returns to give back to his native country. This podcast was recorded at the Academy of Achievement's 2001 Summit in San Antonio, Texas, while K Vaira Vike-Freiberga When Vaira Vike-Freiberga was a small child, her family was forced to flee the Soviet occupation of their native Latvia, and she began school in a refugee camp in Germany. After World War II, her family moved to Morocco and young Vaira completed high school in Casablanca, far from her captive homeland. As a Professor of Psychology at the University of Montreal, she became a leader in her profession, serving as President of the Canadian Psychological Association, of the Social Science Federation of Canada, and of the French branch of the Royal Society of Canada. Despite this success, she never forgot the land of her birth. She remained active in the expatriate community and worked tirelessly to preserve the endangered heritage of Latvian folksong. When her country once again won independence from the Soviet Union, Dr. Vike-Freiberga's work was honored with the Grand Medal of Latvia's Academy of Sciences.Dr. Vike-Freiberga finally returned to live in Latvia in 1998, and within a year was Return (Forced Migration Review 62) Oxford University Voluntary return in safety and with dignity as a durable solution to displacement has long been a core tenet of the international refugee regime. In the 23 articles on Return in this issue of FMR, authors explore various obstacles to achieving sustainable return, some of which are common to diverse situations of displacement while others are specific to certain contexts. Many of the authors discuss the need to guard against premature or forced return, and the risks that such return may entail. They also debate the assumptions and perceptions that influence policy and practice. The examples of good practice and the reflections on research findings presented in this issue are drawn from around the world. The issue also contains a mini-feature on Towards understanding and addressing the root causes of displacement which has been prepared to inform discussions at the first Global Refugee Forum in December 2019.
