An American naval officer based in Japan enters into an arranged marriage to a teenage Japanese geisha known as Madame Butterfly. After a year his squadron departs for the USA hand he cynically promises to return, all the while planning to wed a “real” American wife when he arrives home. For 3 long years Butterfly waits for his return which he does when he learns that she has borne him a son, leading to a tragic conclusion.
