Just So Stories by Rudyard Kipling
Loyal Books
Written originally for his own children, Rudyard Kipling's Just So Stories have continued to delight generations of youngsters since they were first published in 1902. The thirteen stories collected in this book are meant for very young children, but they engage older kids and adults too with their charming conversational style and simple plot lines. These stories are typical examples of the “origin” story, where children are provided with imaginative rather than practical explanations for the “why” “what” “how” “where” “who” “when” questions of childhood. The Just So Stories were tales that Kipling would tell his own daughter who tragically died in infancy of pneumonia. An early forerunner of these stories can be found in The Second Jungle Book in the chapter, “How Fear Came” where the story of how the tiger got its stripes is narrated to Mowgli. Pieces of Britney
BBC Radio 4
Britney Spears: pop icon. Pandora Sykes pieces together what we know about her story, and what it tells us about sex, entertainment, and how we treat women in the public eye. In this eight-part series for BBC Radio 4, Pandora traces Britney's incredible life: from her hardscrabble childhood in rural Louisiana, to her coronation as the inaugural pop princess of the internet, navigating an insatiable celebrity gossip complex; through to a young mother on trial by the paparazzi. Britney is a pop culture phenomenon. Pandora looks behind that mask - and beyond Britney herself - to explore how Britney became the most Googled person in the world, for almost seven years, and what it says, both then and now, about the entertainment industry, politics, sex and how we see women in the public eye. Britney's public struggles saw her placed in a conservatorship, in which she lost the right to control her finances and day to day life. Thirteen years later, and she is in court
Free and Fearless: The Story of the First Parool Trial
Republic of Amsterdam Radio
On 5 February, 1943, thirteen men were executed in the Netherlands for their roles in printing, producing and distributing the illegal anti-Nazi newspaper Het Parool. Two hours before they were executed these men were allowed to write final letters to their family. 75 years later, we were lucky enough to be given access to some of these letters. What emerged as we dug deeper into their stories was "Free and Fearless", a three part series which follows their journeys, commemorating those whose actions helped allow us to live in a free and open society today.
