È laureato in Ingegneria elettrica all’Università degli studi di Bologna.“Oltre alla passione per la politica, da adolescente sognavo di fare il calciatore – racconta Valbonesi ai microfoni di Question Time -. Giocavo nel Cesena e in quegli anni ho conosciuto ragazzi che poi sono diventati calciatori professionisti, come Massimo Ambrosini o Gianni Comandini. È stata un’esperienza molto formativa perché i giochi di squadra sono importanti per imparare a stare con gli altri”.Tra i luoghi più amati, il fiume Bidente, "un posto magico che passa al centro delle comunità e da sempre rappresenta la meta preferita per trascorrere il tempo".
