Romans | Romans 1:1-7 | John Baker

from Multiply Church Podcast · host Multiply Church

Main Point: It is good to be a slave of Christ, set apart for the gospel of God, and called to belong to Him. Power in the Text: Doulos (slave): Paul identifies himself first as a slave of Christ, signifying his complete submission to Jesus (v. 1). Set Apart: Believers are called to be distinct from the world and dedicated fully to God (v. 1). The Gospel: The good news of Jesus Christ is not a new idea but the fulfillment of God’s promises through the prophets as part of His covenant of grace. This gospel centers on Jesus, who is fully human and fully divine. His resurrection, empowered by the Holy Spirit, confirms His victory over sin and death, inviting us into a transformative relationship with Him. Through this, we are called to trust Him, live under His Lordship, and share His good news with the world (vv. 2–5). Through Jesus: We receive the generous gift of His life and the urgent task of sharing that gift with others. "You are who you are through this gift and call of Jesus Christ" (v. 5, MSG). God’s Plan: These verses encapsulate God’s plan for His people. We are recipients of grace, called to live in obedient faith, all for the glory of His name and the spread of the gospel to every nation (v. 5). Why It Matters: Jesus is a benevolent, loving, and kind Lord. In contrast, sin is a sinister taskmaster. Jesus has freed us from the bondage of sin, self-rule, and lies, allowing us to live in His freedom, Lordship, and truth. 10 Lies and the Truth: Lie: "Being a slave of Christ takes away my freedom" (v. 1).Truth: True freedom comes from being a slave to Christ. Sin will always take you farther than you want to go, keep you longer than you want to stay, and cost you more than you want to pay. Christ frees us to live in joyful obedience, leading to purpose and eternal life. Lie: "The gospel doesn’t need to shape every part of my life" (vv. 1-6).Truth: Being set apart for the gospel means allowing the good news of Jesus to transform every area of our lives. Lie: "I can choose my calling based on what I want" (v. 1).Truth: God’s calling is sovereign. He often challenges us to step out of our comfort zones for His glory among the nations. Lie: "God’s plan for the nations doesn’t depend on me" (v. 5).Truth: God involves every believer in His global mission, whether through prayer, giving, or going. Lie: "I’m not special enough to have a calling from God" (vv. 1, 5).Truth: God calls and equips every believer to serve Him based on His grace, not our qualifications. Lie: "I need to make the gospel more appealing for people to accept it" (vv. 2-5).Truth: The gospel is sufficient and powerful in itself. Our role is to proclaim it faithfully. Lie: "Holiness is unattainable, so why try?" (vv. 1, 5-6).Truth: Through the Holy Spirit, believers are empowered to grow in holiness, reflecting God’s character. Lie: "I can blend in with the world and still be faithful to the gospel" (vv. 1, 6).Truth: Being set apart means standing firm against cultural norms that contradict God’s truth. Lie: "My failures disqualify me from being used by God" (vv. 5-6).Truth: God’s grace covers all sin, and He works through imperfect people for His purposes. Lie: "My worth comes from what I do or what others think of me" (vv. 1, 5-6).Truth: Our worth is found in belonging to Jesus. He defines who we are, giving us ultimate security and significance. What to Do: Don’t believe the lies of the enemy, the world, or your flesh; believe the truth of the Gospel. How to Do It: Create a daily rhythm where you pause 2-3x per day to recollect yourself to Jesus so that you center your life on the truth of the gospel. Download “One Minute Pause” App - A simple way to reconnect with God during your busy day. Pray Prayers of Recollection - Recollecting and recentering ourselves on Christ and His truth rather than lies. Why? Jesus offers freedom from sin, self-rule, and lies. Embrace His truth, step into His freedom, and live the life you were made for in Him.
