Running with FGCU XC's Coach Goodson, Karley Pier, and Osman Humeida

from The Big D Podcast

In this episode, FGCU XC head coach Cassandra Goodson, Freshman Karley Pier, and Senior Osman Humeida talk about the current cross-country season. Karley finished the women's race in fifth with a time of 18:39.1 Osman became the first FGCU men's runner to win the FAU Invitational since 2016 in 15:35. First, Coach Goodson also briefly previews tomorrow's race, which involves BYU, Stanford, Florida State among several running powerhouses. Coach Goodson then talks about the first race of the season, where the Eagles took part in the FAU Invitational in Boca Raton. After a lightning delay at FAU, both 5K races were raced. She talks about how her athletes only got 20 minutes to stretch and loosen before the race. Coach also talks what her athletes did during the delay before the race began. From coach Goodson to the runners, we switch to Karley. From Maine, Karley talks about how the heat and humidity are different in Florida than Maine. Karley is a major fan of running in the heat over cold runs. Like Big D, himself, Karley talks about getting the nerves before each race. She also talks about running her first collegiate race. She did not know what the race would be for her. Without expectations, Karley did not feel any pressure. Karley was also grateful her grandparents, who felt from Maine to Florida, saw her compete. We switch from Karley to Osman. He talks about running his first race for FGCU, which he won in 15:35. Osman also mentions how the shorter distance felt different than a normal race. With the cross-country season just under way, With Osman being from Virginia, he answers whether Florida's humidity or Virginia's hills are tougher to run. Osman is looking to take his advantage of his first 8K and looking for a fast time on the same Apalachee Regional Park course that will host the NCAA cross-country championships in November.
