Sid Stamm, Invasive Browser Sniffing and Countermeasures

from CERIAS Weekly Security Seminar - Purdue University

We describe the detrimental effects of browser cache/ history sniffing in the context of phishing attacks, and detail an approach that neutralizes the threat by means of URL personalization; we report on an implementation performing such personalization on the fly, and analyze the costs of and security properties of our proposed solution. About the speaker: Sid Stamm is a PhD candidate in Computer Science at Indiana University where he earned his MS in 2005. He is currently investigating context-aware phishing attacks ("spear phishing") and ways to thwart them; Sid hopes to keep ahead of the real phishers out there, and find ways to prevent such extremely deceptive social/ technical attacks. His research interests are in social engineering, identity verification, and applications of cryptographic protocols for authentication and privacy.

Managing Next Generation Energy Systems Cambridge University Background Stakeholders working with energy systems have to make complex decisions formulated from risk-based assessments about the future. The move towards more renewables in our energy systems complicates matters even further, requiring the development of an integrated power grid and continuous and steady transformation of the UK power system. Network flows must be managed reliably under uncertain demands, uncertain supply, emerging network technologies and possible failures and, further, prices in related markets can be highly volatile. Mathematicians working with engineers and economists, can make significant contributions to address such issues, by helping to develop fit-for-purpose models for next generation energy systems. These interdisciplinary approaches are looking to address a range of associated problems, including modelling, prediction, simulation, control, market and mechanism design and optimisation.
