Spherene Metamaterial in Simulation-Based DFAM

from CDFAM Computational Design Symposium · host Duann Scott

Recorded at CDFAM Computational Design Symposium, NYC 2024Presentation AbstractDespite the enormous potential of leveraging the rich information embedded in biological form, and the rising interest in bio-inspired design, there is no generalized, accessible computational design tool that enables it. In this presentation I will identify what I believe are the reasons for this gap and propose a framework to address it in the context of nine distinct types of architected materials, introduced here as “Bio-Motifs”. This framework consists of three pillars: (i) knowledge graphs, (ii) mathematical models, and (iii) data and information. I will elucidate aspects of this framework with examples from ongoing work spanning diverse organisms and structural elements such as sea sponge networks, honeybee hair, honeycomb, scales and branching structures. I will also demonstrate how we use computational design, simulation and additive manufacturing to both understand the functional basis for biological form, and leverage that understanding to engineer novel application solutions.Speaker BioChristian Waldvogel is the founder of spherene, a Zurich-based company developing autonomous design software. He holds a Master’s degree in architecture from ETHZ, made his first 3D print in 1999, and spent most part of the 21st century as a conceptual artist. His work, which aims to reflect humanity as a species, on a planet and in the universe, was published and exhibited worldwide, and has directly led to the discovery of the spherene geometry in 2012CDFAM Computational Design Symposium series brings together leading experts in computational design from industry, academia and software development for two days of knowledge sharing and networking. Managing Next Generation Energy Systems Cambridge University Background Stakeholders working with energy systems have to make complex decisions formulated from risk-based assessments about the future. The move towards more renewables in our energy systems complicates matters even further, requiring the development of an integrated power grid and continuous and steady transformation of the UK power system. Network flows must be managed reliably under uncertain demands, uncertain supply, emerging network technologies and possible failures and, further, prices in related markets can be highly volatile. Mathematicians working with engineers and economists, can make significant contributions to address such issues, by helping to develop fit-for-purpose models for next generation energy systems. These interdisciplinary approaches are looking to address a range of associated problems, including modelling, prediction, simulation, control, market and mechanism design and optimisation. Have you ever doubted whether you have what it takes to share such a big, bold idea? Over our lives, we're told no so many times that many of us start to believe that we need permission to dream big and to believe our big idea is even possible or worth pursuing. We think it's time that changed. We decided to look at everything that makes us feel so amazing when we play. This includes things like safety, support, and fun. We crafted all of these elements to design an event called the Play Day Summit. On this podcast, Ideas in Play, we take the same ideas used at our event and discuss it tin the context of different careers. The goals is that we help people realize how to escape the trap of playing small in our lives and careers.
