St. Mary of Egypt (The Patrick Madrid Show/Great Stories About Great Saints)

from The Best of the Week · host Relevant Radio

(This conversation may not be suitable for sensitive ears.) Patrick Madrid shares the incredible story of St. Mary of Egypt, a true legend of repentance who went from wild living to desert ascetic. Born in 4th-century Egypt, Mary lived a scandalous life in Alexandria, where she embraced a lifestyle of, let’s just say, “no moral boundaries.” By her own choice: not out of financial need, she became known for her promiscuity.   Here’s where it gets interesting: at nearly 30, she joined a pilgrimage to Jerusalem, not for prayer, but to meet people she was attracted to. 😬 Once there, she tried to enter the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, and BAM: an invisible force blocked her. Imagine the confusion! She realized God was stopping her because of her sinful life. Overcome with shame, she prayed fervently before an icon of the Blessed Virgin Mary and promised to change her ways if allowed entry. When she tried again, the way opened, and she was overwhelmed with grace, repentance, and a new purpose.   She then went into the desert for 47 years (!), surviving mostly on wild plants and facing intense battles with her past temptations. Her sins haunted her in memories and desires, but by God’s grace, she fought them and endured. Near the end of her life, a monk named St. Zosimas encountered her in the desert. She shared her story and asked him to bring her Communion. The next year, she received the Eucharist: and shortly after, she died peacefully, with a message of her love for God scrawled in the sand.    Today, St. Mary of Egypt is a model for anyone who thinks they’ve gone too far to be forgiven. Her life shows God’s relentless mercy, proving that no sin is beyond redemption. So, if you’re ever feeling unworthy, ask St. Mary of Egypt for intercession! 🙏     The best way to listen to the Best of the Week is on our #1 Free Catholic App. It’s free, and always will be!
