Sustainability in fashion

from Doctors Take the Mic · host Gloria Wu, MD

Today we discuss the environment and clothing, featuring insights from Christina Dean, a sustainable fashion activist recognized by British Vogue as one of its top 30 inspirational women. Dean highlights that sustainability in fashion aligns with the UN's sustainable development goals, encompassing economic, environmental, and social aspects. She envisions a fashion industry with closed-loop systems, renewable fibers, recyclable materials, and fair working conditions. However, she points out critical issues such as overconsumption, cheap fashion, and a lack of recycling, leading to environmental harm from items like polyester t-shirts that contribute microfibers to the ocean. Dean emphasizes the need for consumer pressure on fashion labels and manufacturers to accelerate change. The industry requires significant annual investment—estimated at $20 to $30 billion until 2030—to develop sustainable solutions. Companies with strong environmental, social, and governance (ESG) strategies have shown greater long-term profitability, suggesting that sustainability drives commercial success. Dean encourages consumers to wash, care for, and wear their clothes longer, sharing and recycling to reduce environmental impact. Our clothing choices reflect our desired world and the responsibility we bear towards those who produce these garments.
