De su obra, en Descarga Cultura.UNAM puedes escuchar “Capricho italiano”, “Concierto para piano y orquesta No. 1”, “Concierto para violín y orquesta”, “El lago de los cisnes”, “Francesca Rimini”, “Marcha eslava”, “Polonesa de la ópera Eugene Onegin”, “Sinfonía No. 1”, “Sinfonía No. 5 en mi menor Op. 64” y “Sinfonía No. 6”. Sinfonía No. 2, “Pequeña rusa” se estrenó en Moscú en 1873. El autor conoció al “Grupo de los cinco” y la influencia de éstos, junto con algunos temas del folclore ucraniano, inspiraron a Tchaikovsky a componer la pieza que se reproduce a continuación. Este colectivo de compositores, entre los que se encontraban Modest Mussorgsky y Alexander Borodin, fueron los exponentes del nacionalismo musical en Rusia.
