The Anniversary Brothers: Emperor's New Groove 20th Anniversary

from Pop Break Today · host Pop Break Today

After a year of numerous movie anniversaries, Aaron and Josh's movie retrospectives come down to one final film, The Emperor's New Groove, which recently celebrated its 20th anniversary. The Emperor's New Groove is an animated Disney film directed by Mark Dindal. It hit theaters December 15, 2000. It stars David Spade as Kuzco, a selfish Incan emperor who's turned into a llama by his villainous ex-advisor, Yzma, played by Eartha Kitt. John Goodman plays Pacha, a peasant who agrees to help Kuzco reclaim the throne, while Patrick Warburton plays Yzma's dim-witted but well-meaning assistant, Kronk. Musician Sting contributed the lyrics and music to the movie's songs. The Emperor's New Groove garnered positive reception from critics and moviegoers, but its box office performance of $169 million was a big drop off from Disney's previous animated feature, 1999's Tarzan, which made $448 million. The Emperor's New Groove received one Oscar nomination for Best Original Song for "My Funny Friend and Me," which played over the end credits. Podcast topics include the film's characters, the humor, and almost complete lack of songs. Josh and Aaron also discuss the movie's production as well as the experimental era of Disney animated features The Emperor's New Groove kicked off.
