The Deplatforming Debate

from Tech Against Terrorism · host Tech Against Terrorism

This week, we’re exploring the concept of deplatforming. We explain what deplatforming is, how tech company attitudes towards content removal have evolved over the years and consider whether there’s a case for allowing some “borderline” content to remain on platforms. Join Anne Craanen as she speaks to Dr Joe Whittaker, a lecturer in Cyber Threats, Criminology, Sociology and Social Policy at Swansea University. Dr Whittaker has carried out extensive research focusing on online radicalisation, including looking into the role deplatforming plays in radicalisation online. He shares some of the unintended consequences of deplatforming and explains why he believes tech platforms now need a broader strategy to tackle terrorist and violent extremist content online. You can read a transcript of this episode here.If you want to find out more about Tech Against Terrorism and our work, visit techagainstterrorism.org or follow us on Twitter, where you can find resources on this topic.

Song Against Songs, The by G. K. Chesterton (1874 - 1936) LibriVox LibriVox volunteers bring you 9 recordings of The Song Against Songs by G. K. Chesterton. This was the Fortnightly Poetry project for October 16, 2011.Chesterton was a large man, standing 6 feet 4 inches (1.93 m) and weighing around 21 stone (130 kg; 290 lb). His girth gave rise to a famous anecdote. During World War I a lady in London asked why he was not 'out at the Front'; he replied, 'If you go round to the side, you will see that I am.' On another occasion he remarked to his friend George Bernard Shaw: "To look at you, anyone would think a famine had struck England". Shaw retorted, "To look at you, anyone would think you have caused it". P. G. Wodehouse once described a very loud crash as "a sound like Chesterton falling onto a sheet of tin."( Summary from Wikipedia ) What The Tech Podcast guysfromqueens Being on the front-line of new media and technology themselves, Andrew and Paul discuss the many new technologies being introduced to the world everyday.
