The Effect Fat Acceptance Is Having On Kids
from THINK BEFORE YOU SLEEP · host THINK BEFORE YOU SLEEP
A child looks in the mirror and sees what society has taught them to see: not health, not strength, not worth. Just size. The fat acceptance movement was supposed to fix this. But is it helping children or harming them? The body positivity movement arose from fat liberation with the goal of promoting body inclusivity and rejecting harmful societal ideals around weight [citation:8]. On its face, this seems beneficial for children who face bullying, low self-esteem, and weight stigma [citation:1]. Nearly 45 percent of children and teens already struggle with body image issues, according to the National Institutes of Health [citation:7]. The movement offers a counter-narrative: your body is beautiful just the way it is.But critics worry about unintended consequences. When fat acceptance messaging removes all emphasis on health, some children may interpret it as permission to ignore medical guidance entirely. The distinction between loving your body at any size and neglecting your body's health needs is subtle, and children are not known for grasping subtlety. The research is still emerging. One study found that exposure to body positivity content was associated with higher body appreciation but also, paradoxically, with higher thin ideal internalization [citation:8]. Another study developed a specific intervention called the Body Advocacy Movement designed to target fatphobia and anti-fat bias as mechanisms to reduce eating disorder risk [citation:4].The bottom line is this: children need to feel accepted regardless of their size. But they also need accurate information about health. The fat acceptance movement has done important work in reducing stigma. But when it tells a child that weight has no bearing on health, that child may be set up for a lifetime of preventable complications.Turn down the lights, put on your headphones, and press play because the conversation about fat acceptance and children is not about politics. It is about finding the line between compassion and honesty.
