The Hunger Games series is originally three book trilogy written by Suzanne Collins. The first book came out in 2008, with the film adaptation being released in 2012. The series has more than 100 million copies in print worldwide, and spent more than 260 consecutive weeks on The Times best-seller list. The story follows a dystopian world in which North America is divided into twelve districts that have no access or communication with each other and are ruled by a totalitarian government by the name of Panem. Each year a female and male tribute from each district must fight to the death in an arena, aired on live television called the Hunger Games. According to author Suzanne Collins the idea came to her while she was flipping through television stations and saw footage of the Iraq war, and reality television back to back.
