Hans Christian Anderson's "the Little Mermaid" was the inspiration for the Disney Movie, which is markedly different from Anderson's version.  Disney's version creates many more characters and adds funny moments, then gives it the fairy tale wedding ending in which the little mermaid gets her man and all is right with the world.  Hans Christian Anderson's tale is more adult oriented, and has a little more violence, although the spoken version here isn't anywhere near as scary for young ones as the movie.. Anderson's story is wonderfully written and stands alone as a masterpiece in fantasy which I think you will all enjoy on its own merit. .
