THE USE OF ARTISTS IN BOYCOTTS AND PROTESTS

After a sold out performance in Tel Aviv, Israel DJ Black Coffee has received a lot of backlash from his fans on twitter suggesting his ignorance to the oppressive law in Israel and to the killings of Palestinians. Followers accused Black Coffee of ignoring recent calls to boycott Israel by the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions against Israel in South Africa or BDS South Africa. They have imposed an academic and cultural boycott calling on all artists, academics, cultural practitioners to refuse to participate in any activities, in the country which is being boycotted. Meanwhile, some corners of the country such as the South African Jewish Board of Deputies have defended the musician saying imposing a boycott against Israel over and above every other country in the world is itself inconsistent with how South Africa normally conducts its foreign policy.
