John Loretz, who retired as program director of International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War in 2017, spent his professional career educating the public about the health and environmental consequences of nuclear war and campaigning for the elimination of nuclear weapons. He was a member of the steering committee of ICAN—the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons—which received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2017 for helping to achieve the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons.
